Poet John Mitchel, Arkansas Writers MFA Workshop class of ’15, got some great news last week.  ELJ Publications Press will be publishing his first book of poetry, Death Tells Me Jokes, in March 2015.

Mitchel heard about the press after another MFA student, Becca Hawkins ’15 published a poem in and created the cover art for the press’s journal, Scissors and Spackle.  According to Mitchel, “I liked what Emerge was doing and I wanted to get on board.”

Death Tells Me Jokes, Mitchel says, is “a book of lyric poems with a narrative arc.  They chronicle a man in his 20’s fighting himself about poor choices in his life.  As the narrator reflect on these choices, his love interest dies.  A large portion of the book  features Death.  Death is an additional character who repeatedly harasses the protagonist.”

Program Director Stephanie Vanderslice is “thrilled that Mitchel will be publishing his first book just as he’s finishing the program.  We hope that his time here has helped inspire him and direct him toward this achievement.”

Look for updates on Mitchel’s book via this blog and the Arkansas Writers MFA Workshop twitter feed and facebook page.
